It’s been a Good Month!
In the past month we’ve been able to help two women get pregnant, one increase her sex drive, 2 people with acid reflux, another with chronic bowel problems, one person with a history of cervical cancer, 2 women with decrease immune status (they were getting sick all the time) and one boy with allergies and sensitivities. All this plus the normal/daily stuff we get.
I thank God for his help in allowing us to help these people and we, as an office, cannot take the credit for this. I want to thank all of you for being great patients. We love everyone one of you!
What is health?
Everyone wants to be healthy – especially when they are suffering. But what is health? It’s more than being symptom-free. Many people “feel fine” only to drop dead of a heart attack, suffer a stroke or get diagnosed with a terrible illness. And all the time they “felt fine” (although they probably lost a lot of feeling over the years). True health means your body is working right which expresses itself as lots of energy, structural balance, restful sleep, deep breathing, optimism, joy, creativity, inspiration and growth.
If simply being free of symptoms were the only sign of good health, then aspirin, drugs and other medicines would make you healthy, and the people taking the most drugs would be the healthiest. But – are they? As soon as the drugs wear off the masked symptoms come back, along with the need for more, perhaps stronger, drugs.
Drugs don’t make you healthy. They may reduce or alter your symptoms, but that does not make you healthy. What makes you healthy? Life makes you healthy. Having 100% life flowing through you, having a body free of nerve stress so the energies from the brain can travel freely to every part of your body. That’s what health is all about and that’s the goal of the Doctor of Chiropractic.
When do people start to deteriorate?
Apart from sudden trauma the development of disease is often a slow, gradual, inexorable process. Look at the sick old people around you. Do you think that consciously and willingly, they gave up, overnight, the vibrancy in their step, the sparkle in their eyes, the joy in their being? The silent weakening, wearing down and stiffening of their lives, and the resulting boredom happened slowly, ever so gradually. No one wakes up suddenly older.
We have to make a choice: to change or die. Too often we make no choice, and that’s our choice. As the poet W.H. Auden wrote: “We would rather die than change....” But every moment is an opportunity. Start re-connecting your energies and rebalance your being with chiropractic care for you and your family; eat natural, nutrient dense foods (go to the Weston A. Price Foundation for wonderful nutrition advice – www.westonaprice.org); drink healthy un-chlorinated, un-fluoridated water; avoid toxic chemicals; get sunlight; exercise; nurture your relationships (emotional connections) and live creatively so you’re not bored. Life is not for the weak – start getting stronger by living in harmony with nature. We’ll do everything we can to help you.
Want to lose your Gut?
I have looked back at some of our old eNewsletter’s and realized that I haven’t talked about exercise in a while. That is clearly my fault. Exercise is one of the most important things that you can do to help your body live longer and healthier and it is a great way to cope with stress. A study in The Journal of Applied Physiology (October 2005;99:1613-1618) looked at sedentary people and compared different types of exercise to see which one burned the most fat. What they found was no big surprise to me. They found that the highest intensity, vigorous exercise burned the most visceral fat( the fat around your stomach). The take home message: If you want to burn fat walking simply is not enough. Running, elliptical, weight training are all much more effective. Another little tip for you: Vitamin C helps you burn more fat when you exercise. People who took 500 mg of C daily burned 39% more fat while exercising compared to those who took less. (1)
Which Booster Seat Should I Use
This is a very important article written to Chiropractor’s by a highly respected Chiropractor. Dr. Croft is an expert in the field of MVA’s (motor vehicular accidents) and has spent many hours in the court room advising juries. This is a link to an article that he wrote regarding which Booster seat should be used for children. This is very important to me as our daughter is quickly reaching the age where we will have to consider which seat to use. Click here for the article.
Avoid soy infant formula
Babies fed soy-based formula have 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than babies fed milk-based formula. Infants exclusively fed soy formula receive the estrogenic equivalent (based on body weight) of at least five birth control pills per day. Girls are showing signs of puberty as early as age 5 or 6. Premature development of girls has been linked to the use of soy formula and exposure to environmental estrogen-mimickers such as PCBs and DDE. Source: The Weston A. Price Foundation for Wise Traditions in Food, Farming and the Healing Arts. www.westonaprice.org
This is not my writing but I do agree with a lot of it and the Weston Price Foundation is an incredible resource! Estrogen is a huge problem in our society. Pesticides, Sprays, Plastic bottles, and a lot of other things mimic Estrogen and have a horrible effect on our bodies. High amounts of Estrogen are associated with Breast Cancer in Females, Prostate Cancer in Males and overall ill health. Some soy is OK (like fermented soy) if you’re hormone levels are in balance and you’re healthy.
Also, soy formula, although bad, is not the only reason for girls showing signs of puberty. We are bombarded with Antibiotics and Growth Hormones from day one. Milk, Beef, Chickens and just about any other animal are fed these things to help them grow and get as fat as possible. Why? The more they way the more they’re worth! That is why I am a huge advocate of an Organic Diet.
Another benefit to breastfeeding
In addition to the many benefits of breastfeeding (healthier immune system, better weight, emotional stability), new research shows breastfeeding helps babies handle stress better. The study found that children who are weaned naturally were less affected by anxiety as they grew older than children who had formula milk. This dovetails with other research indicating breastfed babies have healthier brains and nerves. (2)
Also, along the breast feeding lines, an article wrote on msnbc says that women who get an epidural during labor/delivery are more likely to have breast feeding problems in the short and long term. The article also indicated that women who received an epidural were twice as likely to give up breast feeding by the time the baby was 6 months old.
I really like this article because a lot of people look at my wife like she has 3 eyes when she says that she did not get an epidural. People just don’t understand why she would want to deal with the pain. Well, it’s not that she wants the pain it’s that she doesn’t want the problems along with the shot. Not only does this above article reaffirm her choice but we have seen videos of children whose mom has received the shot next to children whose mom did not get any pain killers. The baby’s whose mom did not get the shot are much more alert, active and willing to breast feed than the others. You have to remember that the shot is given to the mom based on her size (not the baby’s) .
The Erchonia Laser at Work
Pretty cool video on the laser that we use in our office. The women is blown away at what the laser can do!
Want to Prevent Cancer?
I really enjoyed reading this study in The Journal of Nutrition (2006 American Society for Nutrition J. Nutr. 136:421-427, February 2006) that looked at the effect of CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) and it’s effects on the Cox 2 enzyme’s. For those of you that don’t know Cox 2 is an Enzyme that is highly implicated in Inflammation and tumorigenesis (forming of tumors). The researchers found that CLA repressed these genes in the breast cells. I think that is amazing! (I know I’m a nerd).
For those of you wondering how to get CLA my favorite source is from Raw Milk. There are supplements of CLA but I would prefer you get it from your regular diet (just like anything else). You can also get good amounts of CLA from Non denatured whey protein like the stuff in our PaleoMeal or Total Green but again I would prefer the Raw Milk.
Another Cell Phone Study
I told you all last month that I was going to start posting more articles on the dangers of EMF’s (Electromagnetic Fields) and more specifically cell phone use. I have used a cell phone since about 15 years of age because I traveled a long ways to school as a teenager. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have used one, or at least would have used it differently. A study I found In The Archives of Environmental Health (2004) showed a “significant association between use of both mobile and cordless telephone brain tumors, with some groups experiencing greater than 800 percent increased risk.” This is important for the fact that it’s not just cell phones causing us harm, it’s a lot of the cordless devices, including home phones. Also, I know I have focused a lot of this research on children (there is another study below this one on children) but as adults we should try and limit our exposure to these things too.
Even the prestigious Journal Pediatrics (Vol. 116 No. 2 August 2005, pp. e303-e313) stance says that “precautionary measures be adopted at an individual level” to try and avoid the potential effects from EMF’s. They also say that “Mobile phones are the dominant source of radiofrequency exposure for teens or preteens.” And perhaps my favorite statement in the article is “Regarding the long term health effects of mobile-phone use, the paucity of date, particularly for children, suggests that low-cost precautionary measures are appropriate, especially because some of the exposures are close to guideline limits. Physicians could advise parents that their children’s radiofrequency exposure can be reduced by restricting the length of calls or by using hands-free devices to keep mobile phones away from the head and body.” I think it is our duty as parents to really watch this. Our daughter loves to talk on the phone to Amma and Papa (My parents Dr. JJ and Wava) but we always use the speaker phone and we have the RF Raider on all of our Cell phones to block as much radiation as possible. I strongly urge you all to use you speakerphone as much as possible and when you can’t to use a hands free device!
Chiropractic and children
Case studies and clinical reports and countless parents report what we see in our office every day –
that children under chiropractic care stay healthy and get healthy without dangerous drugs.
There are many ways that infants, babies and children get subluxations: the birth process, falls, accidentally being dropped (it happens more than you think) and even sleeping in bad positions can put severe stress on the body, interfering with nerve, brain, organ and tissue health and resistance to disease.
Many children with physical disorders, learning disorders and emotional problems need a chiropractic spinal checkup. It can make all the difference in the world to them. And it’s drug-free.
Chiropractic and Spinal Research
Remember, everyone, no matter what condition they may have, needs chiropractic care to ensure their body is working without subluxations. If you have any specific questions please feel free to contact us.
Psychology and chiropractic. Chiropractic almost doubled the recovery rate at an addiction treatment clinic. "Jose Mehlman enrolled in the Exodus addiction treatment center as a study participant, he had hit bottom. He had tried many treatments but they were 'nowhere near effective' as chiropractic. Today, Mehlman is living a viable, drug-free life. 'I think that chiropractic care was an integral part of my recovery,' he says.” (5) Read more at http://www.psychologytoday.com/rss/pto-20060714-000001.html
Learning disabilities, dyslexia and chiropractic. In a review of papers on the effect of chiropractic on learning disabilities and dyslexia (eight studies and 25 anecdotal reports), researchers found that all of the studies reviewed suggested a positive effect of chiropractic on individuals suffering from learning disabilities and dyslexia.(6)
Humor
After she woke up, a woman told her husband, "I just dreamed that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine's Day. What do you think it means?"
"You'll know tonight." he said.
That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, she opened it to find a book entitled "The meaning of dreams."
Bye. See you next month. Don’t forget to stop by for a chiropractic checkup and bring in the family too – for a healthier winter! And, If your friends want to subscribe to the eNewsletter send their info to eNewsletter@CRCWellness.com
