Organic Farmed Salmon?

Here is a great article on a new product that is being touted as healthy but is something that I would absolutely avoid! I hope that all of you know by now that I am a big fan of Omega 3 fatty acids which are found in fish (among other things). Ideally we should get these fatty acids from real food such as fish. Here is the problem though, if the fish are wild they are most likely contaminated with Mercury, PCB’s or other toxins from pollution, and water run off from farms. If they are farmed they have genetic problems, PCB’s and the kicker, the dead fish are ground up and fed to the other fish as food! Please read this article and educate yourself on what’s out their. I rarely eat fish anymore because of problems like this and take my Fish oil everyday!

Fish Oil Protects your Heart

A great study in The Journal of Nutrition (136:1874-1878, July 2006) looked at patients with Coronary Heart Disease and a history of MI (myocardial Infarction). They found that rats given a higher diet of polyunsaturated fats (omega 3’s) after the MI had an increased survival rate as compared to rats that were not fed extra Omega 3’s. If you have not read the benefits of Omega 3’s yet I strongly recommend you read my review in the Recommended products section of the website.

Ritalin may hinder growth

According to Stephen R. Hinshaw, Ph.D., professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, children taking Ritalin grow one inch less in a two-year period than children not taking the drug. (5)

Dangers to Cell Phones

This study was very eye opening to me. I have been using a cell phone since I was a freshman in high school and never really thought much of the dangers until lately. Then I came upon this article. In the next few eNewsletters I will go over studies documenting the dangers of cell phones and I will be introducing something you can all do to help limit your exposure to the EMF’s from the cell phones. This study is in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives (Volume 111, Number 7, June 2003).

This study showed that the GSM signals had the following effects:

1) There was a clear dose-response to cell phone radiation meaning that the longer you were on it the more damage is being done

2) There was leakage of many things such as sugar, protein, albumin across the Blood Brain Barrier (a barrier that is meant to block and protect the brain)

3) Growing brains are more vulnerable to the EMF’s (very important for children and teens)

Please take this article seriously; the dangers of Electromagnetic Radiation are very real. Again I will be letting you all know of something that you can do to protect yourself in the very near future.

Coffee and Reduced inflammation

Coffee is one of those things that can be good or bad for you depending on a few variables. One of the reasons it can be very good for you is that it is full of antioxidants. One study (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 83, No. 5, 1039-1046) wanted to see just how good coffee can be. They looked at postmenopausal women coffee drinkers to see if there mortality rate from such things like cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other diseases was any higher or lower than non-coffee drinkers. They found that coffee drinkers did have a lower amount disease but it was not associated with the amount of coffee drank (the more coffee you drank was not necessarily better). This study does show that coffee can reduce inflammation but there are better ways to do it such as eating your veggies and blueberries.

If you want to look at the down side of coffee read further down and you can see.

Chiropractic and spinal research

Remember: everyone, no matter what condition they may have, needs chiropractic care to ensure their body is working without subluxations. If you have any specific questions please feel free to contact us.

Hyperactivity. This is the case of an 8-year-old child with many learning and behavioral disorders associated with ADHD. Symptoms began shortly after the child experienced a fall (18 months earlier). Physical examination revealed the child to have cervical (neck) subluxations. Following two months of care, his mother noted positive changes in behavior and reduction in his complaints of headaches and neck pain symptoms…reports from his teachers at school remarked on the positive changes in his behavior and improvements in academic performance. (6)

Angina pectoris. Angina pectoris, commonly known as chest pain, affects more than 6 million Americans every year. The painful and sometimes suffocating attacks can be brought on by a lack of oxygen in the blood due to the heart working overtime. In this study positive results were shown for weekly chiropractic adjustments in patients with a specific type of angina.

Fifty patients diagnosed with cervicothoracic angina (CTA), chest discomfort originating from the cervical spine and the thorax, were given chiropractic care. There were 225 patients in the control group. Approximately 75% of the chiropractic group reported an improvement in pain and general health. The control group recorded a 22 to 25% improvement. (7)

Can sleep lead to Diabetes?

This is a very interesting question and even more interesting result if you ask me. Diabetes Care (29:657-661, 2006)  looked at men  that  slept 5-6 hours and also men  that slept more than 8 hours.  What did they find?  Well the men that slept  5-6 hours  were  2 times more likely to develop diabetes , but that's not all. The men that slept  more than 8 hours were 3 times more likely to develop diabetes!  One thing I don't like about this study is that it does not look at lifestyle. I really question the people that are sleeping on average more than 8 hours a night. If they are not motivated to get out of bed they are more than likely not motivated to watch their diet, exercise or take care of themselves in any other way. The moral of the story here is to make sure you get a good nights sleep (preferably b/w 6-8 hours) and if your tired go ahead and sleep in a little. Just don't make it a habit.

Read this before saying yes to a bypass, angioplasty or stents

“About 1.6 million Americans undergo heart bypass surgery, angioplasty or stent procedures annually – even though there’s no evidence that these procedures prolong life or prevent future heart attacks in the majority of patients.

“The three-year survival rate for most patients who have had bypass surgery is almost exactly the same as it is for patients with heart disease who don’t have surgery.

“The vast majority of patients with heart disease can reduce the risk of a future heart attack by up to 80% - without undergoing expensive and risky procedures.

“Most bypass and stent procedures are the equivalent of cosmetic cardiology. They make blood vessels appear healthy but do little to reduce heart attack risk. In fact, most heart attacks are caused by tiny blockages that can be hard to detect – and these blockages often are not in the blood vessels that triggered all the concern in the first place. The mortality from bypass surgery ranges from 3%-5%. More than 50% of patients may experience cognitive difficulties, and patients who have bypass surgery are nearly four times more likely to suffer a subsequent stroke. These are poor odds for procedures that don’t necessarily prolong life or make patients healthier.” (8)

Sleep Deprivation and Inflammation

Sleep is something very important to each and every one of us and the truth is that we just don’t get enough of it. An article in The Archives of Internal Medicine (2006;166:1756-1762) ran blood on persons after a good night sleep and after a poor night sleep. They found that after the poor night sleep that inflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor and inteurleukin 6 were elevated. Meaning that not enough sleep causes inflammation which is linked to cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and just about every other disease process. They also found that persons with a poor night sleep had lower immune function, which shows you to listen to your body when your sick and go to bed!

Common coffee additive may cause diabetes

There is something added to our coffee that makes it extremely unhealthy. We’re not talking about all the sugar or fat-laden cream – its the chlorinated water! Chlorine and coffee don’t mix. When chlorine combines with any organic compound it creates a dangerous class of chemicals called dioxins: specifically alloxan, a poison that destroys the beta cells of the pancreas (the ones that produce insulin). (9) In fact, researchers use it to induce diabetes in laboratory animals.

Coffee has been implicated as a cause of pancreatic cancer. (10)

Chlorine also combines with organic materials to form trihalomethanes, which increase the risk of bladder and rectal cancers. The risk increases as the exposure to chlorinated water increases. (11)

If you must drink coffee at least avoid it if it’s made with chlorinated water. When buying a cup of coffee, ask if they use filtered water. If they don’t know, assume the water is chlorinated.

Fun little game

Here is a fun little game I had a patient email me. It is a lot of fun and super addicting. So play at your own risk!!!

Humor

A little boy was overheard praying: "Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am."

After the baby naming of his sister in synagogue, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That Rabbi said he wanted us brought up in a Jewish home, and I wanted to stay with you guys."

One particular four-year-old prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets."

A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to services, "And why is it necessary to be quiet?
One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping."

Six-year-old Angie and her four-year-old brother, Joel, were sitting together in synagogue. Joel giggled, sang, and talked out loud.
Finally, his big sister had had enough, "You're not supposed to talk out loud in synagogue."
"Why? Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked.
Angie pointed to the back of the synagogue and said, "See those two men standing by the door? They're hushers."

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 3, and Ryan 4. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. "If God were sitting here, He would say, 'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'
Ryan turned to his younger brother and said,
"Kevin, you be God!"

A father was at the beach with his children when his four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the sand.
Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked.
"He died and went to Heaven," the Dad replied.
The boy thought a moment and then said,
"Did God throw him back down?"

A wife invited some people to dinner.
At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said,
"Would you like to say the blessing?"

"I wouldn't know what to say," the girl replied.
"Just say what you hear Mommy say," the wife answered.

The daughter bowed her head and said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?"

Bye. See you next month. Don’t forget to stop by for a spinal checkup and an adjustment. And bring in the family too – for a healthier winter!
